"I don’t object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there...You don’t go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater.” -- Oscar De La Renta in WWD Fashion .
I believe in a certain degree of protocol when it comes to those events and a firm believer in "كل شي لاشي"..
You wouldn't go in track pants to meet the Emir, or anything less than conservative for that matter..
How about Michelle's outfit ensemble for the Queen?
She went fairly simple, for the wife of the President of the US/leader of the new world/superpower right now; I thought she was going to go a bit upscale, something as formal as her "swearing in" outfit (**even though personally i didn't think her outfit back then was that good)..
But no, she dressed in a a black skirt-suit and pearls..
Maybe I expected something more elegant along the lines of the late Jackie O, or the ever haute Queen Rania for that matter...
Or just maybe she's trying to make a statement with the recession?
Either way, she could have jazzed up that drab outfit a bit and made it more presentable for after all she was visiting the Queen, not going to a job interview/internship..
Whoever said you had to be monochromatically boring in order to look polished and elegant should be hung by Michelle O's generic pearl necklace,

I think if she should have at least buttoned up the top button of her cardigan, maybe even worn a better material, more silky vest.
Woulda made a big difference, then the crumpled floppy mess it is now
if she is trying to make a statement by dressing down, then you go girl.. but if it is just pure negligence, then keep the comments going.. she'll learn eventually
hmm...so are you saying that wearing J crew isnt a good idea if you're the president's wife or the president for that matter?
I think she looks perfect. Modern preppy. Very smart yet chic at the same time. I'm the kind of person who wears stuff from anywhere or from anytime...the stuff only has to look good. . . .
why not!
miya..
exactly! she looks like she's an intern.
frogman..
lol like she's going to read my blog and be like, hmph i should have gone with the other outfit ;p
ali q..
no, i'm saying she looked tacky, she could have looked more presentable.. sometimes j-crew can look good i guess, but if i was her i'd have gone for something more glam and not a black skirt with a twin set..
erzulie..
because she looks like a secretary?
Oscar is the perfect american designer! maybe he's pissed she never chose his designs ;p she should!
not to mention that hideous cardigan she wore getting into london. looked more like puke to me. im glad she went to the queen as understated cause i can see that this lady can really go dressing wrong, forever.
I found it funny that she had and still gets massive interest in her clothing styles and the media kept a close eye at every single occasion to judge her style and taste. I mean what is it so special about her other than the fact that she is the fist African-American first lady? Are they trying to prove to the world that inspte of her ethnic she is a remarkable stylish first lady!!! It's degrading in that sense.
But the truth remains, I've never fathomed the admiration of her taste as I find it average at best, hell I won't go far till the goddess Jacqueline Kennedy but even Laura Bush looked better and Hillary Clinton held the bar so high for her.
hmmm! Im torn - I love her but I mean common girl! wear something for the future generation to look back & admire the style & quality of our time! I know for fact "or at least I wish" that her intention is to be classic & timeless, but whats wrong about wearing something stands out for once!?
